The problem with a nine-to-five snow plan

Most advice about snow clearing assumes you can shovel after breakfast or wait until the plow comes by mid-morning. Shift workers do not have that luxury. Nurses heading to a hospital shift, factory workers on early starts, police and paramedics coming off nights, and anyone with a long commute all need the driveway usable at hours when most people are asleep.

Shovelling at 4:30 a.m. before a twelve-hour shift is tiring, and shovelling after a night shift when you should be sleeping is worse. A plan that matches your schedule makes a real difference.

Seasonal service runs on snowfall, not on your call

With a seasonal contract, clearing happens automatically after every snowfall of 5 cm or more, December 1 to March 31. You do not have to wake up and call anyone. In long storms the crew makes return visits, so a driveway cleared at night does not stay buried if the snow keeps falling. The City windrow at the end of the driveway is also cleared, which is often the part that actually traps a car.

Priority early-morning clearing

If your shift starts early, the most useful add-on is priority early-morning clearing for $125 for the season. It places your property earlier in the route after an overnight snowfall, so the driveway is more likely to be done before you leave.

Front-line workers save 5%

Nurses, firefighters, police officers, paramedics and teachers receive 5% off a seasonal contract. Many of these jobs involve exactly the early starts and overnight shifts that make snow clearing difficult. Mention your occupation when you ask for a quote.

Tips for coming home after a night shift

• Park where the crew can clear around you, or leave the driveway empty if you have a second spot.
• Keep the porch light on a timer so steps are visible when you get home in the dark.
• Ask about walkway and steps clearing (from $150) so you are not climbing snowy steps after a long shift.
• Consider seasonal salting at $175, which includes freezing rain and refreeze visits, because a driveway cleared at midnight can glaze over by dawn.

Know it was done before you leave

After each visit you receive a timestamped photo of the cleared property. If you are checking your phone in a break room at 3 a.m., you can see whether the driveway has been done yet and plan your trip home. We are fully insured with $2,000,000 liability coverage and WSIB registered.

Seasonal or per-visit for irregular schedules

Some shift workers assume per-visit service is cheaper because they are away part of the week. The catch is that per-visit clearing ($70 to $85 a visit) generally has to be requested, and a 3 a.m. snowfall is exactly when you are least likely to remember to book. A seasonal contract (single or 1.5-car $650 to $725, double $815, plus HST) means you never have to think about it, whatever rotation you are on that week. A 30% deposit holds your spot, and the balance is due before December 1, by cash, cheque, Interac e-transfer to sales@thamesvalleysnow.ca, or card.

If you work rotating shifts, write your typical start times on your quote request. Even a rough idea of when you usually leave helps us understand which properties need to be done first after an overnight snowfall.
