Signing Up Early vs. Waiting: Does It Change Your Price?

4 min read · Thames Valley Snow, London, Ontario

Every fall, some homeowners lock in snow removal service in September while others wait until the first flakes are already falling in December. Whether this timing actually affects what you pay is a fair question, and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Many companies offer early-bird pricing or lock in current-season rates for customers who sign before a certain date, often sometime in October. This rewards early commitment and gives the company predictable revenue and route planning well before the season starts, which is valuable enough to them that they're willing to offer a modest discount for it.

Waiting doesn't always mean paying more in raw dollar terms, but it does mean more risk. Popular routes fill up, and if your preferred provider is already at capacity by the time you call in November, you may end up choosing a less established company or a route with a less favourable position, which can affect service quality even if the price tag looks similar.

Price increases due to demand are also more common later in the season, particularly after an early, unexpected snowfall creates a rush of last-minute sign-ups. Providers with remaining capacity sometimes adjust pricing upward during these rush periods, simply because demand suddenly outpaces the slots they have left.

What to Compare in Any Quote

Whenever you sign, compare quotes on the same terms. What depth triggers a visit? Is the price for the whole season or per visit? Which months are covered? Are walkways, steps, sidewalks and salt included or extra? Is the company insured? A low headline price can look very different once add-ons and a higher trigger depth are factored in.

How Our Seasonal Pricing Works

Thames Valley Snow seasonal residential plans start at $650 and cover the core season with automatic service at 5 cm. Per-visit service is $70. Common add-ons are seasonal salting ($175), walkway plus up to 6 steps ($175), city sidewalk clearing ($90), pet-safe de-icer ($120), and a $95 extension for November or April coverage. Seniors and front-line workers get a 5% discount. Quotes are sent within 2 business days, and commercial properties are priced per site.

Why Signing Before the Snow Helps

Signing before the first storm gives time to mark your driveway edges, steps and drains while the ground is visible, and to sort out details like where snow should be piled. It also means your property is already on the route when the first 5 cm falls, rather than being added mid-storm. We carry $2,000,000 in liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and a certificate of insurance is available on request.

Seasonal vs. Per-Visit: Which Fits You?

Seasonal plans suit households that want every qualifying storm handled automatically without thinking about it, and a predictable cost for budgeting. Per-visit service suits people who only want help after bigger storms, or who are away for part of the winter. If you are unsure, look at how often you cleared the driveway yourself last winter and multiply by $70. If that number is close to or above the seasonal price, a seasonal plan is usually the better value, and it also means you never have to call during a storm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sign up after the season starts?

Yes, if there is room on a route near you. Request a quote and you will hear back within 2 business days.

Is per-visit cheaper than seasonal?

In a light winter it can be. At $70 a visit, a $650 seasonal plan works out to roughly nine visits, so in a typical London winter seasonal often costs less.
