How Does Pricing Change for Long Driveways?

4 min read · Thames Valley Snow, London, Ontario

Long driveways in London, Ontario, take more time, fuel, and equipment passes to clear, and that extra work is usually reflected in the price.

Most snow removal companies price by driveway length or square footage rather than a flat rate, since a 200-foot rural driveway takes considerably longer to clear than a standard 40-foot residential one. Wider driveways with room for multiple vehicles factor in too.

The number of passes needed also matters. A long driveway often needs multiple plow passes to fully clear the width, and if there's nowhere to push the snow, crews may need to haul it away, which adds time and cost.

Surface type plays a role as well. Gravel driveways require more careful blade height to avoid damage, and long gravel driveways take extra care compared to paved ones.

How We Measure Without a Site Visit

You do not need to wait for someone to come out with a tape measure. We measure driveways, walkways and sidewalks from City of London property maps and aerial imagery, which shows length, width, turnarounds and where snow can be stored. Quotes go out within 1 business day. If your property has something the imagery cannot show, like a new extension or a gate, just mention it when you request a quote.

Seasonal Price Tiers by Size

Our seasonal plans (December 1 to March 31) are tiered by how many cars the driveway fits, which tracks closely with the area being cleared:

Unusually long driveways, such as those on country lots, are priced on their actual measured area, because the time per visit is what drives cost. Every seasonal plan includes automatic visits at 5 cm or more, return visits in long storms, clearing of the City windrow, and a timestamped photo after every visit. A 30% deposit holds your spot, with the balance due before December 1.

Where Snow Goes Matters as Much as Length

On a long driveway, the real challenge is often storage. Each pass pushes snow to the sides, and by February the banks can narrow the lane. Leaving room at turnarounds and along the edges, and marking those edges before the season, keeps the full width usable. Edges, steps and drains are marked pre-season on every property we service, which protects lawns and keeps drains flowing.

Per-Visit vs. Seasonal for Long Driveways

If you only want help in big storms, per-visit clearing runs $70 to $85 + HST for typical driveways, with larger properties quoted individually. For long driveways, though, a seasonal plan usually makes more sense: London regularly sees enough 5 cm snowfalls in a winter that per-visit charges add up, and seasonal clients are already on the route when a storm hits.

Extras That Change the Total

A few add-ons are worth considering on a long driveway. Seasonal salt ($175 + HST) covers freezing rain and refreeze visits, which matter on sloped or shaded lanes. A pet-safe de-icer option is $120 + HST. If you need service outside the main season, the November 1 to April 15 extension is $95 + HST. Seniors and front-line workers receive 5% off seasonal plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do gravel driveways cost more?

Gravel needs a slightly raised blade to avoid scattering stones, which can add time on long runs. The quote reflects that.

Can I add walkways and steps?

Yes. Walkway and steps service starts at $150 + HST, and a walk plus up to 6 steps is $175 + HST.
