Walkable neighbourhoods need clear walkways

Wortley Village is a place where people walk: to the shops, to school, to visit neighbours. That means the front walk and steps get a lot of use from residents and visitors alike. A cleared driveway with a buried or icy front walk is only half the job.

Our walkway and steps service starts at $150 and is cleared on the same visit as the driveway. For many Wortley homes, where the front door faces the sidewalk and the driveway runs down the side, the front walk may be the part of the property used most.

Ontario municipalities set their own rules about clearing public sidewalks, so check what applies to your street. Either way, your own walk, steps and the path to the mailbox are yours to keep safe, and they are where visitors are most likely to slip.

Compact driveways and where the snow goes

Driveways in older parts of London tend to be narrow, sometimes shared and often running beside the house to a garage or parking spot at the back. There is little room for snow on either side. Choose your snow storage spot before the season starts, keep piles low and spread out, and avoid stacking snow against the foundation or over window wells.

If you have a mutual driveway, agree with your neighbour on how service will work and tell us the property line when you book. That way snow goes onto the right lawn every time.

Street parking adds another wrinkle. On streets where cars park along the curb, the City windrow can be uneven and packed hard by tires. Clearing it promptly keeps the end of the driveway from freezing into a lumpy ridge.

Tree cover and lingering ice

Mature trees shade many Wortley driveways all day in winter. Shaded surfaces stay cold, and any meltwater from roofs or the sunnier end of the driveway refreezes there. Freeze-thaw cycles through a London winter make these spots slippery again and again.

If part of your driveway or walk is decorative stone or pavers, mention it; near decorative surfaces we use a raised rubber-edge blade.

How the season runs

Service runs December 1 to March 31 and is automatic every snowfall of 5 cm or more. Nobody has to call. We clear the City windrow at the end of the driveway, return in long storms and send a timestamped photo after every visit. Single or 1.5-car driveways are $650 to $725 plus HST. Per-visit clearing at $70 to $85 is an option if you rarely drive in winter. Seniors and front-line workers, including nurses, firefighters, police, paramedics and teachers, save 5 percent on seasonal plans.

A 30 percent deposit holds your place and the balance is due before December 1. Quotes are measured from City of London maps and aerial imagery and returned as a fixed price within 1 business day.
