The other trap is refreeze: meltwater from the day turns to black ice on steps and paths overnight. Rock salt also works poorly below about -10°C, so a path that looks treated can still be slippery on very cold mornings.

How Seasonal Service Reduces the Risk

With seasonal service from December 1 to March 31, we come automatically every snowfall of 5 cm or more, so there is no need to call. We clear the City windrow, return in long storms, and send a timestamped photo after every visit, which family members living elsewhere find reassuring. Seniors and front-line workers receive 5% off seasonal service. Many households add walkway and steps clearing (from $150 plus HST) and seasonal salting ($175 plus HST, including freezing rain and refreeze visits).

Planning Ahead Before December

The best time to set up help is before the first storm, not during it. Book early so the edges of your driveway, steps and drains can be marked before the ground freezes, and so the route is set by December 1. Seasonal contracts take a 30% deposit, with the balance due before December 1. If you want an early start or late finish, an extension from November 1 to April 15 is $95 plus HST. For households that need the driveway open before early medical appointments or shifts, priority early-morning clearing is available for $125 plus HST.
