When several adults share one driveway, deciding who clears the snow, and who pays for it, is worth settling before the first storm.

Why shared homes argue about snow

In a house with roommates, adult children living at home, or several generations under one roof, snow clearing tends to fall on whoever wakes up first or feels most guilty. Over a winter that can build resentment. One person always shovels; another always needs the car out first; a third works from home and never notices. A clear plan, agreed in November, prevents most of it.

Option one: share the work

Some households build a rotation. It can work, but snow does not follow a schedule. A heavy fall on someone's busy week, or overnight before an early shift, quickly breaks the rotation. The City windrow at the end of the driveway is also the hardest part, and it often arrives after the shoveller has gone back inside.

Option two: share the cost

Many shared households find it simpler to split a seasonal contract. The price is fixed in advance, so it is easy to divide. Seasonal prices plus HST are $650 to $725 for a single or 1.5-car driveway, $815 for a double, and $1,050 for a three-car, paver or stamped driveway. Clearing is automatic after every snowfall of 5 cm or more from December 1 to March 31, with return visits in long storms, and the windrow is cleared too.

Fair ways to divide it

Write the agreement down, even in a group chat, so everyone remembers it in February.

Handling the payment

One person usually books the service and receives the quote. A 30% deposit holds the spot and the balance is due before December 1. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, Interac e-transfer to sales@thamesvalleysnow.ca, or card, so housemates can pay their share to the booking person in whatever way suits them. If a senior or a front-line worker (nurse, firefighter, police officer, paramedic or teacher) lives at the address, ask whether the 5% seasonal discount applies.

Agree on shared-home rules

Paying for service is only half the plan. Agree where everyone parks during storms so the driveway can be cleared fully, who handles a quick touch-up on the steps if needed, and whether to add walkway and steps clearing (from $150) or seasonal salting ($175, including freezing rain and refreeze visits). A timestamped photo after every visit can be shared in the household chat, so everyone knows when the driveway is done.

Why it usually saves friction

Splitting a known, fixed price is much easier than keeping score of who shovelled last. Nobody is stuck with the windrow, nobody has to be the one who wakes early, and the conversation about snow happens once in November rather than every storm.
