How Do You Handle Snow Removal for a Shared Driveway?

Shared driveways come with their own set of questions when it comes to snow removal, especially for duplexes and semi-detached homes across London, Ontario.

The cleanest approach is a single contract that covers the whole shared driveway, with neighbours splitting the cost. This avoids the patchwork look and liability gaps that come from two separate companies clearing different halves on different schedules.

If neighbours can't agree on one provider, some crews will still clear just one side, but it's worth flagging this upfront since narrow equipment access and property line boundaries can make partial clearing trickier and slower.

Clear communication between neighbours about cost splitting, timing preferences, and who handles scheduling makes the arrangement much smoother than leaving it undecided until the first storm.

At Thames Valley Snow, we are happy to quote a shared driveway as one property, so both households get the same service on the same visit.

Agreeing on One Plan Before December

Our seasonal service runs from December 1 to March 31, so the best time for neighbours to sit down together is October or November. Agree on three things: which provider you will use, how the cost is split, and who is the main contact for the crew. Put it in a short email between the two households so nobody has to remember a hallway conversation in February.

A 50/50 split is the most common arrangement, but it is not always the fairest. If one side has a longer parking pad, a separate walkway or extra steps, it makes sense for that household to cover those add-ons on their own while the shared lane is split evenly.

What Gets Cleared on a Shared Drive

With one seasonal contract, the whole shared surface is cleared automatically every snowfall of 5 cm or more, with no need for either neighbour to call. In long storms we make return visits, and the City windrow (the ridge of heavy snow the municipal plow leaves across the end of the driveway) is cleared too. That windrow is often the biggest source of friction between neighbours, because it blocks both cars at once.

Before the season starts, edges, steps and drains are marked so the operator knows exactly where the pavement ends on each side. On a shared lane this matters even more, since the snow has to be stacked in a way that does not bury one neighbour's lawn or walkway more than the other's.

Avoiding Disputes Over the Season

After every visit we send a timestamped photo. For shared driveways this is useful for both households: everyone can see that the full width was cleared and when it happened, which takes the guesswork out of who did what.

Agree in advance on where snow piles should go, whether cars should be moved to one side on storm nights, and what happens if one household wants extras like salting. Seasonal salt is $175 + HST and includes freezing rain and refreeze visits, so it is easy to split if both sides want it.

Rough Costs for a Shared Driveway

Shared driveways are priced on the actual surface, measured from City of London maps and aerial imagery, and we send the quote within 1 business day. As a guide, seasonal prices plus HST are $650 to $725 for a single or 1.5-car drive, $815 for a double, and $1,050 for a 3-car, paver or stamped drive. A 30% deposit holds the spot, and the balance is due before December 1. If either household is a senior or a front-line worker, ask about the 5% seasonal discount.

Shared Driveway FAQ

Can only one neighbour sign up?

It is possible, but clearing half a shared lane is awkward and rarely looks right. One contract for the whole drive is almost always simpler and fairer.

What if we do not want a full season?

Per-visit service runs $70 to $85 + HST per visit, which can suit neighbours who mostly shovel themselves.
