Snow Removal for a New Build With Fresh Landscaping

New homes with recently installed landscaping face a unique risk when it comes to snow removal. Freshly laid sod, newly planted trees, and young shrubs are far more vulnerable to damage than mature landscaping that's had years to establish itself, which makes the first winter after a build especially important to plan carefully.

New sod in particular needs protection from heavy equipment traffic and rock salt runoff during its first winter. Roots haven't fully established yet, and repeated exposure to salt-heavy meltwater running off a driveway edge can damage or kill grass that hasn't had a full growing season to take hold. Choosing salt products carefully and directing meltwater away from new sod areas makes a real difference.

Newly planted trees and shrubs near a driveway are at higher risk of physical damage too, since their root systems and trunks haven't developed the resilience of established plants. Extra marking with stakes, and clear communication with your snow removal provider about exactly where new plantings sit, helps prevent accidental damage during clearing.

Driveway and hardscape settling is another consideration unique to new builds. Freshly poured concrete or newly laid interlock can still be settling during its first winter, and it's worth asking your provider about any special care needed for very new surfaces, particularly around salt use on new concrete that hasn't fully cured.

Mark Everything Before the First Snow

The single most useful thing you can do on a new build is mark the edges before the ground freezes. Driveway edges, the line where sod meets the driveway, young trees, shrub beds, garden lights and any irrigation heads all disappear under the first real snowfall. Once they are buried, an operator is working from memory. Tall driveway markers placed every few metres along both sides of the driveway, plus a marker beside each young tree or bed close to the edge, give the crew a clear picture all winter. At Thames Valley Snow, driveway edges, steps and drains are marked before the season starts, and homeowners can point out anything new that needs extra care.

Choosing a De-icer for New Surfaces

Rock salt is effective and affordable, but it can be hard on concrete that is less than a year old and on the soil around new sod. If your driveway or walkway was poured this year, ask your builder how long it needs before salt is safe to use. Many homeowners with new landscaping prefer a gentler product for the first season. Our pet-safe de-icer add-on ($120 for the season) is applied instead of rock salt, which is easier on young lawns, plants and paws. Seasonal salting with standard salt is a $175 add-on for properties where that is not a concern.

Where Should the Snow Go?

On a mature property, snow usually gets pushed to the same spots every year. On a new build there is no habit yet, so decide early. The best pile spots are on hard ground or dormant lawn away from young trees, away from the house foundation, and somewhere meltwater can drain toward the street rather than back across the driveway. Avoid piling snow on new sod seams or freshly planted beds, since the weight and the salt in plowed snow can both cause damage that only shows up in spring.

Will a plow damage my new sod?
