Why new asphalt needs some attention
Fresh asphalt is softer and more flexible than a driveway that has been in place for a few years. It continues to cure and harden over its first months. During that time, the surface can scuff more easily, sharp edges can be marked by steel tools, and the unsupported edges along the lawn are more vulnerable to crumbling if heavy equipment rides over them.
None of this means you cannot clear snow on new asphalt. It means a few habits make a difference. If your installer gave you specific care instructions, follow those first.
Protect the edges
The edges of a new driveway are often its weakest point, especially if the soil beside it has not settled. When snow is pushed off the driveway, it should be pushed over the edge rather than having equipment drive along it. Before the season, Thames Valley Snow marks edges, steps and drains, so the crew can see exactly where the asphalt ends under snow. On a new driveway, mention that it was recently paved so extra attention is given to the edges.
Avoid gouging and chipping
- Do not chip at ice with metal tools. Use de-icer and let it work.
- Use a plastic shovel or one with a wear strip for hand clearing.
- Avoid turning car tires sharply while parked, especially in warmer spells.
- Keep heavy items such as trailers or dumpsters off the new surface where possible.
Salt and de-icers on new asphalt
Asphalt is generally more tolerant of de-icing salts than new concrete, but over-application is never a good idea. Excess salt ends up in lawns and garden beds along the edges, and residue tracks into the house. Seasonal salting ($175) includes freezing rain and refreeze visits applied in sensible amounts. If you have pets or new landscaping beside the driveway, the pet-safe de-icer option ($120) is another choice.
Manage water
Water is the main enemy of any driveway, new or old. Make sure downspouts discharge onto the lawn rather than across the new surface, and that snow piles are placed where their meltwater drains away. Prompt clearing helps too. Snow that sits for days melts and refreezes repeatedly, and meltwater that finds a small gap at the edge of new asphalt can start freeze-thaw damage early.
With seasonal service, the driveway is cleared automatically after every snowfall of 5 cm or more from December 1 to March 31, with return visits in long storms, so snow does not sit and melt on the surface.
Watch it through the season
The timestamped photo after every visit gives you a running record of the driveway's condition over its first winter. If you notice a soft spot, edge crumbling or a crack forming, note it and raise it with your paving contractor in spring while it is still small.
Planning ahead
Many paving contractors recommend waiting before applying sealer to a new driveway; ask your installer when it is appropriate for yours. Sealing at the right time helps keep water out of the surface, which is the best long-term protection against the freeze-thaw cycles every London winter brings.
If your new driveway is wider or longer than the old one, mention it when you ask for a quote. Quotes are measured from City of London maps and aerial imagery, and recent changes may not show yet, so a quick note about the new size keeps your fixed price accurate.
