Protecting Stamped Concrete and Pavers in Winter

A decorative driveway is a real investment, and winter is when it is most likely to get scratched, chipped or stained.

Why decorative driveways need different care

Plain asphalt is forgiving. Stamped concrete has a textured, coloured and usually sealed surface, and interlocking pavers have hundreds of joints and edges that can catch on a blade or a shovel. Both cost more to repair than ordinary asphalt, and a scrape across a coloured stamped surface is very visible.

The main winter risks are mechanical damage from steel blades and shovels, chipping when people try to break up ice, and surface wear from heavy or repeated use of harsh de-icers.

The plow blade matters

A standard steel cutting edge scrapes close to the surface, which works well on asphalt but can mark a decorative finish or catch a raised paver. For paver, stamped and three-car driveways, Thames Valley Snow uses a raised rubber-edge blade near decorative surfaces. The rubber edge flexes over small irregularities instead of digging in, and the slight lift leaves a very thin layer rather than scraping bare. That thin layer is then dealt with by salting or de-icer if needed.

Seasonal pricing for paver, stamped and three-car driveways is $1,050 plus HST, which reflects the extra care and equipment.

Pick the right de-icer

Many manufacturers and installers recommend caution with rock salt on new or decorative concrete, and especially in the first winter after it is poured, because concrete is still curing. If your driveway is new, check what your installer advised. For an established stamped or paver driveway, the most important things are to avoid over-application and to sweep away leftover residue in spring.

Our pet-safe de-icer option ($120 for the season) is a gentler choice that many owners of decorative driveways prefer, particularly if they also have pets or nearby garden beds. Seasonal salting ($175) includes freezing rain and refreeze visits.

Never chip ice off decorative surfaces

The single most damaging thing you can do to stamped concrete or pavers is to attack ice with a metal ice chipper, a spade or the edge of a steel shovel. You will almost always chip the colour layer or crack a paver. Instead, apply de-icer and give it time to work, then push away the slush with a plastic shovel.

Pre-season marking and walkthrough

Before the season, edges, steps and drains are marked so the crew can find them under snow. On a paver driveway, it is worth also pointing out any raised pavers, soldier-course borders, built-in lighting or step edges. Those are the details that catch a blade if nobody knows they are there.

Keeping an eye on the surface

After every visit you receive a timestamped photo of the cleared driveway. That gives you an easy way to see the condition of your surface across the season, and to raise any concern early. We are fully insured with $2,000,000 liability coverage and WSIB registered.

In spring, look closely at the joints between pavers. Winter can wash out some joint sand, and topping it up keeps pavers from shifting. For stamped concrete, ask your installer whether a fresh coat of sealer is due. A good sealer is one of the best defences against water getting into the surface and freezing, which helps the driveway survive the next winter too.
