Snow Care for Paver and Stamped Driveways in Lambeth

Lambeth, on the southwest edge of London, has many homes with interlocking paver or stamped concrete driveways, and these decorative surfaces need a different winter approach than plain asphalt.

Why decorative driveways need extra care

Interlocking pavers have joints and edges that can catch a steel blade. Stamped concrete has a textured, sealed surface that can be scuffed. Both are expensive to repair, and damage often does not show until the snow melts in spring. The good news is that with the right equipment and a bit of planning, they handle winter well.

Homeowners sometimes try to protect a decorative driveway by not clearing it at all, letting snow pack down until spring. That usually backfires. Packed snow turns to ice, and ice on a textured surface is still ice. Worse, people end up chipping at it with shovels or metal scrapers, which does far more harm than careful clearing would have done.

The blade makes the difference

For paver and stamped driveways, we use a raised rubber-edge blade near decorative surfaces. The rubber edge clears snow without grinding into joints or scratching sealer, and keeping the blade slightly raised avoids catching a paver that has heaved a little over the winter. These driveways are priced in our $1,050 plus HST tier, the same as three-car driveways, because they take more time and care.

The same care applies to the walkway and front steps. Many Lambeth homes carry the paver or stamped finish from the driveway right up to the front door, and those surfaces get the same gentle treatment. Natural stone steps can be slippery even with a thin glaze of ice, so it is worth adding the walkway and steps service if guests or deliveries use the front entrance.

De-icing without damage

Salt is not automatically bad for pavers or stamped concrete, but how it is used matters. A light, even application on a cleared surface works best. Heavy piles left to sit can be hard on sealers and on the plants beside the driveway. If you have pets, our pet-safe de-icer option is $120 for the season.

Sand and grit are sometimes suggested as an alternative. They add traction but do not melt anything, and they can track into the house and get ground into joints. For most decorative driveways, a properly applied de-icer on a cleared surface is the better choice, followed by a good sweep once winter is over.

Freeze-thaw and heaving

London sees plenty of freeze-thaw cycles through the winter. Water that gets into joints freezes and expands, which can lift individual pavers slightly. A raised blade avoids catching those, and good drainage keeps the problem small. Our seasonal salt service at $175 includes freezing rain and refreeze visits, which helps keep meltwater from refreezing on the surface overnight.

Lambeth also sees lake-effect snow bands that come in off Lake Huron and drift across the London area. Those events can drop quick, heavy snow with little warning. Automatic service means nobody has to remember to call when it starts coming down.

Mark borders and edging

Paver driveways often have soldier-course borders, plastic edge restraints and landscape lights along the sides. These are easy to hit when buried. Before the season we mark edges, steps and drains, and we ask Lambeth customers to point out lights, edging and any raised sections.

How the season works

Service is automatic every snowfall of 5 cm or more from December 1 to March 31, with return visits in long storms. We clear the City windrow at the end of the driveway and send a timestamped photo after every visit. Walkways and steps can be added from $150.

Seniors and front-line workers, including nurses, firefighters, police, paramedics and teachers, receive 5 percent off seasonal service. A 30 percent deposit holds your spot, with the balance due before December 1.
