Carrying an infant car seat down icy steps is one of those moments every parent dreads. A cleared, salted route from the door to the car is worth prioritizing.

• Walkway and steps clearing: from $150 for the season.
• Seasonal salting: $175, including freezing rain and refreeze visits.
• Pet-safe de-icer: $120, handy if the family dog is also part of the routine.

Choose de-icer carefully near the door, since residue tracks inside on boots and stroller wheels. A large mat inside the entrance catches most of it.

Appointments and early mornings

Newborns have frequent check-ups in the first weeks and months, and many are booked in the morning. If a parent also returns to work early, priority early-morning clearing ($125) places your property earlier in the route after overnight snow. A timestamped photo after each visit tells you the driveway is done before you start buckling in the car seat.

Grandparents can help, without a shovel

Many grandparents want to help with a new baby, and some offer to come over and shovel. Family members can book and pay for the service instead, which is a practical gift that saves everyone from a cold morning outside. If the grandparents themselves are seniors, they receive 5% off a seasonal contract for their own home too.

• Park in the garage or close to the house so the car seat trip is short.
• Keep a small shovel and de-icer inside the front door for quick touch-ups.
• Leave the porch light on a timer for evening arrivals.
• Keep the car's windshield brush and scraper inside the car, not in the shed.
