Snow Removal for Narrow Driveways in Old North

Many Old North homes were built long before two-car garages, so driveways tend to be narrow, long and tight against the house or the neighbour.

The challenge with older lots

Old North has mature trees, older homes and lots that were laid out for a different era. A typical driveway may be one car wide, run alongside the house to a detached garage at the back, and leave very little room on either side for snow. When there is nowhere obvious to put snow, it ends up piled against the house, against a fence, or spilling onto a neighbour's side.

Plan where the snow goes

The most important question on a narrow driveway is where the snow will be stored all winter. Snow piles grow with every storm, and by February a poorly placed pile can narrow a driveway so much that a car door will not open. Good options are usually the front lawn on the side away from the walkway, or a strip of yard beside the garage. Avoid piling against foundations, window wells and gas meters.

Walkways and steps on older homes

Old North homes often have concrete or stone steps, front porches and walkways that need as much attention as the driveway. Older steps can be uneven, and ice on them is a real fall risk. Our walkway and steps service starts at $150 and is worth considering if the front entrance is used daily or by visitors and delivery drivers.

Pre-season marking is essential

Narrow driveways leave little room for error. Before the season we mark edges, steps and drains so the crew can clear tight spaces without catching lawn edges, garden borders or the corner of a porch. If your driveway is shared with a neighbour, tell us where the property line is when you request a quote so the snow goes to the right side.

The windrow and street parking

On streets where cars park along the curb, the City windrow can be heavy and uneven. We clear the City windrow at the end of your driveway as part of every visit, so you are not digging through packed snow before you can leave.

Mature trees and overhead hazards

Old North is known for its large, mature trees. They are a big part of the neighbourhood's character, but in winter they add a few things to think about. Heavy wet snow and freezing rain can bring down branches onto driveways and walkways, and roots can lift sections of older paving so the surface is uneven under the snow. If you know about a raised slab, a broken edge or a low branch over the driveway, tell us before the season so it can be noted with the other markings.

Shaded driveways under big trees also tend to stay icy longer, because the sun never reaches them to help with melting. That makes salting more important on Old North lots than on open, sunny driveways. Our seasonal salt service is $175 plus HST and includes freezing rain and refreeze visits.

Automatic, every snowfall

Seasonal service runs December 1 to March 31 and is automatic every snowfall of 5 cm or more. You do not need to call. In long storms we come back so the driveway does not get buried again, and after each visit you get a timestamped photo. Most Old North driveways fall into our single or 1.5-car range at $650 to $725 plus HST. If you would rather pay as you go, per-visit clearing is $70 to $85.
