Freeze-Thaw Cracks and Potholes in Your Driveway

Most winter driveway damage is not caused by a single storm but by water freezing and thawing again and again inside the surface.

How freeze-thaw damage happens

Water expands when it freezes. When meltwater seeps into a small crack, a joint or a porous spot in asphalt or concrete and then freezes overnight, it pushes the surface apart a tiny amount. When it thaws, more water fills the slightly larger gap. Southwestern Ontario winters swing above and below freezing many times, so this cycle repeats all season. Over a few winters a hairline crack can become a wide one, and a weak patch can become a pothole.

Snow sitting on a driveway for days makes it worse. It melts in the afternoon sun, runs into cracks, and freezes again after dark. Clearing snow promptly reduces how much meltwater is available to cause damage.

Signs to look for this fall

Before the snow arrives, walk your driveway and look for:

Take a few photos. If a section gets worse over the winter, you will have a clear before-and-after for any repair contractor in the spring.

Habits that limit winter damage

Keep water moving away from the driveway. Downspouts that empty onto the driveway or beside it are one of the most common causes of ice and of cracking. A simple extension that carries water onto the lawn helps a lot.

Clear snow before it gets packed down by tires. Packed snow turns to ice, and ice is harder to remove without chipping or scraping the surface. With seasonal service, the driveway is cleared automatically after every snowfall of 5 cm or more, and the crew returns during long storms, so snow rarely sits for days.

Avoid metal tools on ice. Chopping ice with a metal shovel or an ice chipper can gouge asphalt and chip concrete. Use de-icer to loosen it instead.

Salt and your surface

Salt itself does not create cracks, but it lowers the freezing point of water, which can mean more melt and refreeze cycles on the surface during borderline temperatures. Using the right amount, rather than piling it on, is the best approach. Seasonal salting at $175 covers freezing rain and refreeze visits, applied by the crew in sensible amounts. For decorative concrete or pavers, or if you have pets, the pet-safe de-icer option at $120 is gentler.

Plowing and older driveways

A driveway that is already cracked or heaving needs a bit more care. Before the season, edges, steps and drains are marked so they are easy to see under snow, and you can point out any raised slabs or weak edges at the same time. For paver, stamped and three-car driveways ($1,050 seasonal), the crew uses a raised rubber-edge blade near decorative surfaces to reduce the risk of scraping.

In spring, look again. Small cracks are far cheaper to seal before they grow, and the timestamped photos from each winter visit give you a record of how the driveway looked through the season.

Shoveling or blowing snow onto the same lawn edge all winter can also compact soil against the driveway edge and trap water there. Spreading snow piles out, and keeping them off the driveway surface itself, gives meltwater a path to drain into the lawn rather than back across the asphalt.
