How wind chill affects snow removal timing

Cold and wind change how snow behaves. Here is what that means for when and how driveways get cleared.

Wind chill is a measure of how cold it feels on exposed skin when wind is added to low temperatures. It doesn't change the actual air temperature, but it does change how snow behaves on the ground and how crews plan their work.

Wind moves snow after it lands

On calm days, snow stays roughly where it falls. On windy, cold days, light dry snow blows around and builds drifts against fences, garage doors and the edges of driveways. A driveway that was cleared in the morning can have new drifts by the afternoon, even if no more snow has fallen.

That's why the same storm can look very different from one street to the next. Open areas with few trees or houses to break the wind tend to drift more, while sheltered streets keep their snow in place.

Cold air makes snow lighter and drier

In very cold weather, snow is usually powdery and light. It's easier to push but blows around more easily. Wetter snow near the freezing mark is heavier and sticks, but it doesn't drift as much. Crews take both into account when planning passes during and after a storm.

Why timing matters on windy days

Clearing too early during a windy storm can mean the job needs doing again once the wind drops. Our seasonal plans use a 5 cm trigger, so a visit starts when 5 cm has built up. On windy days, drifting can push some spots well past that depth while others stay almost bare, so crews focus on getting driveways usable and safe.

Ice risk in deep cold

Salt works less well as temperatures drop, so ice is harder to manage in deep cold. If a slippery walkway or steps are a concern, salt is available as a $175 seasonal add-on, and pet-safe de-icer is $120. A front walk plus up to 6 steps can be cleared for $175 per season.

Staying safe yourself

Extreme wind chill can cause frostbite on exposed skin quickly. If you're clearing by hand, dress in layers, cover your face and hands, take breaks indoors and avoid overexertion. Watch for Environment Canada cold warnings, and consider leaving heavy clearing to a crew on the coldest days.

Protecting the edges of your driveway

Drifts can hide the edge of a driveway, which makes it easier for equipment to catch lawns, gardens or curbs. Before the season starts, we mark driveway edges so crews can see where to stop even after drifting. After each visit we send timestamped photos, so you know when the work was done.

Planning ahead for a cold, windy winter

If your property is exposed to the wind, think about where snow tends to drift each year and keep that area clear of cars and bins during storms. Parking to one side, moving garbage and recycling bins away from the driveway and keeping a bag of de-icer by the door all make a windy storm easier to deal with. A seasonal plan also means you don't have to watch the forecast or book a visit: once 5 cm falls between December 1 and March 31, the crew comes out.

Frequently asked questions

Will you come back if snow drifts onto my driveway?

Visits are triggered by snowfall of 5 cm or more. If a new snowfall reaches the trigger, the driveway is cleared again as part of a seasonal plan.

Does wind chill stop snow removal?

No. Crews dress for the conditions and keep working, though very windy storms can change when it makes sense to do a full clean-up.
