How Snow Density Affects Plowing and Shovelling Difficulty

Not all snow is created equal, and the density of a given snowfall has a bigger impact on how hard it is to clear than the total depth alone. Ten centimetres of light, fluffy snow and ten centimetres of wet, heavy snow are two completely different jobs.

Cold, dry snow forms when temperatures are well below freezing during the storm. It tends to be light and powdery, which makes it easy to push with a plow and relatively easy to shovel, even in larger volumes. The tradeoff is that this type of snow blows and drifts easily in wind, which can undo cleared areas quickly.

Wet, heavy snow forms closer to the freezing mark, often when temperatures hover right around zero. This snow packs together, weighs significantly more per centimetre than dry snow, and is far more physically demanding to shovel. It also puts more strain on plow equipment and can be more likely to compact into a hard, icy base if it is not cleared promptly.

The difference matters for planning too. A forecast showing 10 centimetres does not tell the whole story on its own, since the same number can mean a quick, easy clearing job or a slow, exhausting one depending on the snow's water content and temperature at the time it falls.

Why Wet Snow Is Harder on Your Body

Heavy, wet snow is one of the most common reasons people get hurt shovelling. Each scoop weighs much more than it looks, and lifting and twisting with a full shovel puts strain on the back and heart. Push snow instead of lifting it when you can, use a smaller shovel blade, take breaks and stop if you feel pain or shortness of breath.

Light Snow Comes With Its Own Problems

Dry powder is easy to move, but wind can blow it straight back across a cleared driveway. Drifts tend to build up in the same spots every winter, often near garages, fences and the end of the driveway. Clearing those spots fully, right down to the pavement, helps them stay open longer.

Ice Forms Fastest From Packed Wet Snow

When wet snow is driven over or walked on before it is cleared, it packs into a hard layer that can turn to ice overnight. Clearing promptly and treating steps and walkways is the best defence. Thames Valley Snow offers seasonal salt for $175, which includes freezing rain and refreeze visits, and pet-safe de-icer for $120.

How a Seasonal Plan Deals With Both

Our seasonal plans from December 1 to March 31 are triggered automatically every time 5 cm or more falls, whether the snow is light or heavy. In long storms we come back for return visits so heavy snow does not build up, and we clear the City windrow that the street plow leaves behind, which is often the densest snow of all. You get a timestamped photo after every visit.

Pacing Yourself With Heavy Snow

When the snow is wet and dense, clear it in layers instead of trying to move the full depth at once. Push rather than lift where you can, keep the shovel close to your body, and take regular breaks. Clearing partway through a long storm keeps each pass lighter than waiting for the full accumulation.
