How to Tell If a Storm Will Bring Heavy, Wet Snow or Light Powder

4 min read · Thames Valley Snow, London, Ontario

Two storms forecasting the same snowfall total can be completely different experiences depending on whether that snow comes down as light powder or heavy, wet flakes. Learning to read the signs ahead of time helps set the right expectations before the storm arrives.

Temperature is the biggest factor. When the air temperature through the entire snow-forming layer of the atmosphere stays well below freezing, snow tends to fall as light, dry powder. When temperatures hover close to zero, especially near the surface, snowflakes partially melt and refreeze on the way down, producing heavier, wetter snow that clings together.

Forecasts usually hint at which type to expect even without stating it directly. A forecast calling for temperatures well below freezing throughout the storm points toward powder. A forecast with temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark, especially with any mention of a rain-snow mix or messy conditions, points toward wet, heavy snow.

Humidity plays a role too. Storms pulling in more moisture, often the ones associated with Colorado lows or systems tracking up from the south, tend to produce wetter snow than a typical cold, dry Alberta clipper system passing through quickly.

Why It Matters for Clearing

Wet snow is far heavier than powder. A few centimetres of wet snow can weigh as much as several times that depth of light powder, which is why it is so hard on backs and snowblowers. It packs down quickly under tires and feet, then freezes into ruts once temperatures drop. Powder blows around and drifts, so a driveway can fill back in on a windy day even after the snow stops.

What to Do Before Each Type

Before a wet snowfall, clear early and often rather than waiting for the storm to end. Do not drive on the driveway until it has been cleared if you can avoid it, because packed wet snow is the start of ice. Plan for ice control afterward, since slush that refreezes overnight is a common cause of falls. Before a powder storm, expect drifting along fences, garages and the end of the driveway, and expect the City plow to leave a windrow that is still heavy even when the snow itself is light.

Health and Safety on Heavy Snow Days

Shovelling heavy wet snow is hard physical work. Take small loads, push rather than lift where you can, take breaks, and do not throw snow over your shoulder. Anyone with heart or back concerns should think twice about clearing heavy snow at all. Snowblowers clog more easily in wet snow; never clear a jam with your hand, even with the engine off.

How Our Seasonal Plan Handles Both

Our seasonal plan runs December 1 to March 31 and starts automatically for every snowfall of 5 cm or more, so you do not have to watch the forecast or call. We come back during long storms, clear the City windrow, and send a timestamped photo after every visit. Seasonal salt is a $175 + HST add-on and covers freezing rain and refreeze visits, which matter most after wet snow.

Wet vs Dry Snow FAQ

Is wet snow more likely early and late in the season?

Often, yes, because temperatures sit closer to zero. Mid-winter storms are more likely to be colder and drier, though either can happen.

Does salt work on wet snow?

Salt works best near freezing, so it helps after wet snow, but clear the snow first. Below about -10°C rock salt works poorly.
