Every fall, there's a rush of homeowners trying to lock in snow removal service right as the first flurries appear in the forecast. By then, many companies are already fully booked for the season, which leaves latecomers scrambling or settling for a provider they didn't really want. Understanding the typical booking timeline helps you avoid that scramble entirely.
Most established snow removal companies in the London area start filling their route capacity as early as August and September, well before anyone is thinking about snow. Routes are planned around geography, so a company can only take on so many properties in a given area before adding more would stretch response times too thin. Signing up early means securing a spot on a route rather than hoping there's room left.
Waiting until October or November still works in many cases, but options start narrowing. Popular providers may already have full routes in certain neighbourhoods, forcing you to either wait for a cancellation or choose a less established company with more availability but a less proven track record.
The real risk shows up if you wait until the first snowfall actually happens. At that point, most reputable companies are locked into their season already, and last-minute sign-ups often mean either no availability at all or getting placed on an overflow list with no guaranteed response time until the company can adjust routes.
Thames Valley Snow recommends booking before the season starts on December 1, and the earlier the better. Quotes are measured from City of London maps and sent within 1 business day (commercial within 2), a 30% deposit holds your spot on a route, and the balance is due before December 1. Getting ahead of the rush is the simplest way to avoid winter stress altogether.
Why earlier is better
Snow companies build their routes in the fall. Each crew can only cover so many properties during a storm, so once a route is full, new clients have to go on a later route or a waiting list. Booking in October or November gives you the best chance of a spot on the route that suits your street and schedule.
What happens after you book
Once you accept the quote and pay the 30% deposit, your property is added to a route. Before the season starts, the crew marks driveway edges, steps and drains so they can be found under snow. The balance is due before December 1, and service runs automatically from then on at 5 cm or more.
Booking late in the season
You can still book after the first snowfall, but the choice of route and start date may be limited. If you are caught by an early storm, per-visit clearing is a way to get through it while a seasonal spot is arranged.

Do I need to be home for the setup visit?
No. The crew marks edges and steps from outside. Tell us about anything hidden, like a low curb or a garden bed, so it can be marked.
