Do You Need a Cleared Path for Delivery Drivers and Mail?

With more deliveries arriving at homes than ever before, from parcels to groceries to prescriptions, a clear path to your door matters more in winter than most homeowners realize. It's easy to focus entirely on the driveway and forget the walkway that delivery drivers and mail carriers actually need to use.

Canada Post and most courier services have guidelines about safe access, and a walkway buried in snow or covered in ice can result in delayed or skipped deliveries. Drivers aren't required to risk a fall to drop off a package, and repeated missed deliveries because of an unclear path is a common but avoidable frustration during winter months.

Beyond deliveries, an icy or snow-covered walkway is a liability concern too. If a mail carrier or visitor slips and falls on your property, homeowners can be held responsible in certain circumstances, particularly if the hazard was left unaddressed for an extended period. This is a good reason on its own to keep walkways clear and salted, separate from any inconvenience to service providers.

Many residential snow removal packages include walkway clearing as part of the standard service, but it's worth double-checking that this is explicitly covered rather than assumed. Some quotes only cover the driveway itself, leaving the walkway as the homeowner's responsibility unless specifically added.

What a Safe Path Looks Like

A safe path runs from the sidewalk or driveway all the way to the door, is wide enough to walk comfortably while carrying a box, and is cleared down to the surface rather than packed into ice. Steps and the landing at the door matter most, since that is where people stop, turn and set down parcels.

Steps, Landings and Mailboxes

Steps collect snow that blows in and melts during the day, then refreezes overnight. Keep them cleared and treated after every snowfall. If your mailbox sits at the curb, keep the snowbank in front of it cleared so a carrier can reach it, and watch for the windrow the City plow leaves across the end of the driveway.

Adding Walkways to Your Plan

Not every snow plan includes walkways, so check yours. With us, the walkway plus up to 6 steps is a seasonal add-on at $175, and city sidewalk clearing along your frontage is $90. Salting is a separate seasonal add-on ($175), and a pet-safe de-icer ($120) is available for homes with pets. Every visit is recorded with timestamped photos.

Small Steps That Help

Good outdoor lighting, a sturdy handrail and a clearly visible house number all make winter deliveries safer and faster. A boot mat and a small bench or shelf near the door gives drivers somewhere dry to set packages down.

When You Are Away

Winter trips and long work days are when paths get forgotten. If you will be away during a storm, arrange for someone to clear and salt the walkway and steps, or make sure it is part of your snow plan. Parcels left on an uncleared step can also sit in the snow for days, so ask senders to use a parcel locker or post office pickup if no one will be home. A clear path also helps neighbours, care workers and emergency crews reach your door quickly if they ever need to.
