Finding a reliable snow removal company in London, Ontario comes down to a handful of things that actually predict good service: proof of insurance, clear pricing, real reviews, and a track record of showing up when they say they will.
Start by asking for proof of liability insurance. Snow removal carries real risk, from slip-and-fall claims to accidental property damage, and a company without proper coverage can leave you exposed if something goes wrong on your property.
Look for clear, written pricing rather than vague verbal quotes. A trustworthy company will explain their trigger depth, what's included in the contract, and what counts as an extra charge before you sign anything. If a company is cagey about pricing details, that's a red flag.
Check reviews and ask around locally. Companies that have served London for multiple winters and have a track record with real customers are generally a safer bet than a new operation with no history. Google reviews, Facebook, and word of mouth in local community groups are all good sources.
Check insurance and WSIB, in writing
Ask for a certificate of insurance, not just a verbal yes, and check that the company name matches the one on your contract. WSIB registration matters too: if a worker is hurt on your property and the company is not covered, questions about responsibility can get messy. Thames Valley Snow carries $2,000,000 in liability coverage, is WSIB registered and is a member of the London Property Management Association (LPMA).
Know exactly what triggers a visit
The trigger depth is the amount of snow that starts service. Ask what it is, whether you need to call, and what happens in a storm that lasts all day. Our seasonal service is automatic for every snowfall of 5 cm or more, December 1 to March 31, with return visits in long storms.
Find out what is actually included
- Is the City windrow at the end of the driveway cleared? (Ours is.)
- Are walkways and steps included or extra? Ours start at $150 plus HST.
- Is ice control included, and does it cover freezing rain and refreeze? Our seasonal salt is $175 and does.
- How are paver or stamped driveways protected? We use a raised rubber-edge blade near decorative surfaces.
- Are edges, steps and drains marked before the season?
Look for published prices and proof of service
Companies that publish prices make comparison easier. Ours are listed plus HST: $650 to $725 for a single or 1.5-car driveway, $815 for a double, $1,050 for a 3-car, paver or stamped driveway, and $70 to $85 per visit. Payment is a 30% deposit with the balance before December 1. Proof of service matters too: we send a timestamped photo after every visit, so there is never a question of whether your driveway was done.
Red flags to watch for
- Cash-only, no written contract.
- No proof of insurance on request.
- Vague answers about trigger depth or return visits.
- Full payment demanded with no written terms.
- Promises that sound too good, like exact clearing times in every storm.
At Thames Valley Snow, we are upfront about our pricing and happy to answer any question before you commit. Quotes come from City of London maps and aerial imagery within 1 business day.
