When to Switch From a Snowblower to Pro Snow Service

4 min read · Thames Valley Snow, London, Ontario

Plenty of London homeowners handle their own snow removal for years with a reliable snowblower, and there's nothing wrong with that approach as long as it's working for you. But there are clear signals worth watching for that suggest it might be time to switch to professional service instead.

Age and physical capability are the most common triggers. Operating a snowblower involves real physical effort, from maneuvering a heavy machine through deep snow to occasionally clearing jams or handling maintenance. If it's become more of a strain than it used to be, or if a health change makes winter equipment operation riskier, that's a legitimate signal to reconsider.

Time constraints matter too. A demanding new job, a growing family, or simply a schedule that's gotten busier over the years can make the twenty or thirty minutes of snowblowing after every storm feel like more than you can reasonably fit in, especially before an early morning commute.

Equipment reliability is a practical factor as well. An aging snowblower that needs frequent repairs or replacement parts can end up costing more in maintenance than a full season of professional service would, especially once you factor in the value of your own time spent on repairs and upkeep.

Comparing the Real Costs

A new two-stage snowblower, fuel, oil, shear pins and an annual tune-up add up quickly, and that is before counting your time on early mornings. A seasonal plan with Thames Valley Snow starts at $650 for a standard driveway and covers every visit from 5 cm of snow for the season. If you would rather pay as you go, per-visit service is $70.

Seniors and front-line workers receive a 5% discount, which can make the switch easier on the budget.

What Changes When You Switch

With a seasonal plan you do not need to call when it snows. We come automatically once 5 cm falls, and you get timestamped photos of each visit so you can see the work was done even if you are at work or away. Driveway edges, steps and drains are marked before the season so the first storm goes smoothly.

Many homeowners keep their old snowblower for small touch-ups, like clearing a path to the back door, and leave the heavy work to us.

Add What You Need

If you also want your walkway and up to six steps cleared, that add-on is $175 for the season. Sidewalk clearing is $90, and seasonal salting is $175. You can build the plan around the parts of the property that matter most to you.

Safety First

Clearing heavy, wet snow is hard physical work, and it is a common cause of back strain and overexertion every winter. If you have a heart condition, a recent injury or simply find the work harder each year, that alone is a good reason to hand it off. Snowblowers also carry their own risks, from clogged chutes to slips while wrestling a machine on an icy slope.

If you do keep clearing some areas yourself, take breaks, push rather than lift where you can, and stay off ladders and roofs when it is icy. There is no prize for doing it all yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sign up?

The earlier the better. Routes are planned before the season, so signing up in the fall gives you the best chance of a spot on a nearby route.

Do I need to be home for visits?

No. Visits happen automatically, and timestamped photos show you when the work was done.
