What Happens If Your Snow Contractor No-Shows?

A contractor failing to show up during a storm is a business owner's worst-case scenario, and unfortunately it does happen, usually with smaller or less established operations that overcommit beyond what they can actually deliver.

In the moment, your first priority is safety. If your lot or walkways are unsafe and no service is coming, you may need to arrange emergency clearing yourself, even at a premium, or restrict access to the most hazardous areas until conditions improve or help arrives.

Document everything about the no-show, including when you tried to reach the contractor, what response you got if any, and photos of the property condition. This matters both for holding the contractor accountable and for your own liability protection if an incident occurs during the gap in service.

Review your contract for what it actually says about missed service. Some contracts include remedies for repeated failures, like credits or termination rights, while others are vague on this point, which is worth noticing and addressing before you sign your next agreement.

Warning signs before the season starts

Most no-shows can be spotted early. A contractor who is slow to send a written quote, cannot give you a certificate of insurance, or is vague about when they clear and how you will know the job is done is telling you something about how the busy nights will go. If a quote arrives as a single number on a text message with no service details, ask for the terms in writing before you pay a deposit.

How to protect yourself in writing

Your agreement should spell out the season dates, the snowfall depth that starts a visit, whether return visits happen during long storms, and how each visit is recorded. A record of every visit is what lets you prove a missed storm, rather than arguing about it afterward.

How Thames Valley Snow handles each visit

Our seasonal service runs December 1 to March 31. Once you are booked, your property is cleared automatically every time snowfall reaches 5 cm, with return visits during long storms, and you do not need to call. You get a timestamped photo after every visit, so you can see the work was done without walking outside. We carry $2,000,000 in liability insurance, are WSIB registered, and are members of the London Property Management Association.

For businesses, we quote per site, usually within 2 business days, clear before opening, and keep a photo log for the season. Homeowners get a fixed price within 1 business day, measured from City of London maps and aerial imagery.

If it happens mid-storm

Clear or salt the most-used path to your door first, keep people away from icy areas you cannot reach, and write down the time you noticed the problem. Then contact the contractor in writing so there is a dated record of the missed visit.

Questions about missed service

Should I pay for a visit that never happened?

Not without proof. Ask your contractor for the record of each visit; if they cannot show one, raise it in writing before the next invoice.

Can I switch contractors partway through winter?

Yes. Check your current agreement for cancellation terms first, then line up the new provider before you end the old one so your property is not left uncovered.
