Snow Removal While Recovering From Surgery or an Injury

A winter recovery is hard enough without worrying about who will clear the driveway after the next snowfall.

Why shovelling is off the table

Shovelling snow combines heavy lifting, twisting and pushing, often in the cold and often first thing in the morning. After a hip or knee replacement, abdominal or heart surgery, a fracture, or a back injury, those are exactly the movements doctors and physiotherapists commonly tell patients to avoid for a period. Your own care team is the authority on what you can do and when, and it is worth asking them directly about snow clearing before you go home.

The problem is that snow does not wait for recovery. The first heavy fall after discharge can create real pressure to "just do a bit" with a shovel. Planning ahead removes that temptation.

Arrange it before the procedure

If your surgery date is in late fall or winter, set up snow clearing before you go in. Quotes are measured from City of London maps and aerial imagery, so nobody needs to visit while you are preparing, and you receive a fixed price within 1 business day.

A seasonal contract clears your driveway automatically after every snowfall of 5 cm or more from December 1 to March 31. There is no need to call after each storm, which matters if you are tired, on medication or simply not checking the weather.

Ice is the bigger risk

For someone on crutches, a walker or a cane, or someone whose balance is affected by medication, a fall on ice is the real danger. Snow can be walked around; a glazed step cannot. Consider:

Getting to appointments

Recovery usually means follow-up visits, physiotherapy and tests, many in the morning. If you or a driver need the car out early, priority early-morning clearing ($125) places your property earlier in the route after overnight snow. The City windrow at the end of the driveway is cleared too, which is often the heaviest snow of all and the part most likely to block a car.

Family members can handle it

Often it is a spouse, adult child or sibling who sorts out these details. Family members can book and pay on someone's behalf, and a timestamped photo after every visit lets them see the driveway and walk were done without asking the patient to go outside and check.

Seniors and front-line workers receive 5% off a seasonal contract, which may apply depending on who is recovering.

If your recovery is short

For a recovery of a few weeks, per-visit service at $70 to $85 per visit is another option. It suits people who only need help for part of the winter. For longer recoveries, or when a fall would be especially serious, a seasonal plan with salting means you never have to think about it.

Small things that help at home

Keep a light at the entrance on a timer, place a non-slip mat inside the door, and keep de-icer where a family member can reach it without going outside. Ask visitors to text before arriving so someone can turn the outside light on.
