Snow Clearing for Wheelchair and Walker Users at Home

For anyone using a wheelchair, walker, scooter or cane, winter safety depends on a route that is wide, level and free of ice, not just a driveway that is mostly clear.

Why standard clearing may not be enough

A typical driveway clearing focuses on getting a car in and out. For someone with limited mobility, the critical path is different: from where the car or accessible transit vehicle stops, across the driveway, along the walkway, up any ramp or steps, and to the door. A thin ridge of packed snow that a walker can trip on, or a glazed patch a wheelchair cannot grip, can make the whole route unusable.

Map the route before winter

Walk or roll the route in November and note every part of it:

Share these details when you request a quote. Before the season, edges, steps and drains are marked so they can be found under snow; ramp edges and transitions are worth marking too.

Width and edges matter

A wheelchair or walker needs a path wider than a single shovel width, with clean edges rather than a narrow trench. When planning with a crew, ask for the walkway to be cleared to its full width. Make sure snow is not piled where it will melt and drain across the route, because that meltwater refreezes overnight.

Walkway and steps clearing starts from $150 for the season. Seasonal salting ($175) covers freezing rain and refreeze visits, which is often the single most important add-on for someone who cannot risk a slip.

Choosing de-icer

Some de-icers leave a gritty or wet residue that tracks into the house on wheels and tips. Others can be harsh on paws if there is a service dog in the home. The pet-safe de-icer option ($120) is worth considering for households with a service or companion animal.

Timing around appointments

Many people with mobility limits have regular appointments, accessible transit bookings or caregivers who arrive early. Priority early-morning clearing ($125) places your property earlier in the route after overnight snow. With seasonal service, clearing happens automatically after every snowfall of 5 cm or more from December 1 to March 31, with return visits in long storms, and the City windrow at the end of the driveway is cleared.

Family and caregivers can arrange it

If you are arranging this for a parent or relative, family members can book and pay on their behalf. A timestamped photo after every visit lets you confirm the route was cleared without phoning to ask. Seniors receive 5% off seasonal contracts.

Keep a backup plan

Even with a service, keep a bag of de-icer and a light plastic shovel just inside the door for small touch-ups, such as snow blown onto the porch after the crew has left. A long-handled de-icer spreader can be used from a seated position. Thames Valley Snow is fully insured with $2,000,000 liability coverage and WSIB registered.

Inside the door, a large absorbent mat helps catch slush and de-icer before it spreads across floors where wheels and walker tips can slip. Keep a towel nearby for wiping wheels on wet days, and check rubber walker tips and cane ferrules before winter, since worn tips lose grip quickly on any wet surface.
