Should You Get a Snow Quote Before the First Snowfall?

3 min read · Thames Valley Snow, London, Ontario

There's a natural temptation to wait until it actually snows before thinking seriously about a snow removal quote, since the need feels more real once there's white stuff on the ground. But waiting for that first snowfall to start shopping around is actually one of the more common mistakes homeowners make heading into winter.

Getting a quote before the first snowfall gives providers time to do a proper site assessment without the pressure of active weather. A company can walk your property, measure the driveway accurately, note any tricky features like curves or shared access, and give you a well-considered price rather than a rushed estimate given over the phone during a storm.

Pricing also tends to be more favourable before the season gets busy. Companies aren't yet dealing with a flood of urgent requests from people who waited too long, so there's more room for a normal, unhurried conversation about your needs and their availability. Once the first storm hits, providers with any remaining capacity are often fielding calls from people in a rush, which changes the dynamic.

Route availability is the practical reason this matters most. Once a company's route is full for a given area, it's full, regardless of how much a new customer is willing to pay. Getting your quote and signing early secures your spot before that happens, rather than hoping there's room left once you're already dealing with an unclear driveway.

Thames Valley Snow recommends booking before the season starts on December 1, and the earlier the better. Quotes are measured from City of London maps and sent within 1 business day (commercial within 2). A 30% deposit holds your spot on a route, with the balance due before December 1. A little advance planning avoids the scramble that comes with waiting until snow is already falling.

Routes fill before winter

Each crew can only cover so many driveways during a storm. Getting your quote in October or November means you can choose a spot on a route before it fills.

Your price is fixed

Once you accept a seasonal quote, the price is set for the season no matter how much it snows. Visits are automatic from December 1 at 5 cm or more.

Pre-season setup

Booking early lets the crew mark your driveway edges, steps and drains before snow covers them, which protects your lawn and landscaping.

Getting a quote is quick

We measure from City of London maps and aerial imagery and usually send a fixed price within 1 business day. A 30% deposit holds your spot, with the balance due before December 1.
