How street layout changes the windrow
City plows push snow to the right side of the road as they go. On a straight street, that leaves a fairly even windrow across each driveway. On a crescent or in a court, the plow is turning, and snow can pile up more heavily on the outside of the curve. Homes at the end of a court or on the outer edge of a bend often get a bigger, heavier windrow than their neighbours.
We clear the City windrow at the end of the driveway as part of every visit. In long storms, when the plow may come back more than once, return visits keep the end of the driveway open.
Windrow snow is not the same as the fluffy snow on your driveway. It has been scraped off the road, mixed with slush and pushed into a dense ridge, and it freezes hard if left overnight. Clearing it the same day is always easier than chipping at it the next morning.
Pie-shaped lots and wide driveway mouths
Lots at the end of courts are often pie-shaped, narrow at the street and wide at the back. The driveway may flare at the street or curve toward the garage. That shape leaves less frontage for snow storage near the road, so it helps to choose a storage spot further back on the lawn early in the season.
- Store snow on the wider part of the lawn, not at the narrow front.
- Keep piles low near the sidewalk so drivers can see children.
- Avoid piling snow on the neighbour's side of a shared lot line.
- Leave fire hydrants and mailboxes clear if they sit at your lot.
Corner lots get double duty
Corner lots have two street frontages and sometimes two sidewalks. Snow storage has to account for sightlines at the intersection, because a tall pile on the corner can hide oncoming cars from drivers and from people crossing. Keep corner piles low and well back.
If your driveway exits onto the side street of a corner lot, the windrow can be especially heavy where plows from two directions meet. Let us know when you book so the crew expects it.
Mature landscaping on established lots
Sherwood Forest is an established neighbourhood, and many lots have mature trees, shrubs and garden beds along the driveway. Before the season we mark edges, steps and drains so these stay protected under the snow. If your walkway or driveway is pavers or stamped concrete, we use a raised rubber-edge blade near decorative surfaces.
Shade from mature trees also keeps parts of the driveway icy longer. Seasonal salt is $175 plus HST and includes freezing rain and refreeze visits.
