Plowing vs. Snowblowing: Which Is Right for Your Home?

4 min read · Thames Valley Snow, London, Ontario

When you hire a professional snow removal service, the crew might clear your driveway with a plow truck, a walk-behind snowblower, or a combination of both, depending on your property. Understanding why one method gets chosen over another helps explain differences in pricing and service between properties that might look similar from the street.

Plow trucks are the workhorse for most residential driveways with enough width and clearance for a vehicle to maneuver. They move large volumes of snow quickly, which makes them the most efficient option for standard driveways after a typical storm. The tradeoff is that they need adequate space to turn and operate safely, which rules them out for very narrow or tightly enclosed driveways.

Snowblowers become the better choice for narrow walkways, tight side yards, or driveways boxed in by fences and structures where a truck simply can't fit or maneuver safely. They're slower than a plow truck but offer precision that a larger vehicle can't match, which matters on properties with delicate landscaping close to the cleared surface.

Some properties genuinely need both. A wide driveway might get the bulk of the snow cleared by truck, while a narrow walkway to the front door gets finished with a snowblower for a cleaner result. This combination approach costs more in labour time but produces a more complete result on complex properties.

Questions That Decide the Method

A few simple questions usually settle which method fits. How wide is the driveway, and is there room for a truck to turn or back out safely? Are there fences, retaining walls or a garage close to the edges? Is the driveway shared, sloped or unusually long? Are there gardens, lights or young trees right against the paved surface? Wide, open driveways suit a plow; narrow, enclosed or heavily landscaped ones often need a snowblower for at least part of the job.

How Equipment Affects Price

Price follows time and equipment. A driveway a plow can clear in a few passes costs less than one that needs a crew member on a snowblower for every visit. Thames Valley Snow seasonal residential plans start at $650, and per-visit service is $70; your quote reflects the size and layout of your property. Walkway and up to 6 steps can be added for $175 for the season, and city sidewalk clearing is a $90 add-on.

Protecting the Surface

Both methods can mark a driveway if the edges are not clear. Interlock, new asphalt and gravel all need a little more care. Marking edges before the season, which we do on every property, helps the operator stay on the paved surface whatever the equipment.

Heavy, Wet Snow and Deep Storms

The type of snow matters as much as the driveway. Light, dry powder moves easily with either machine. Heavy, wet snow and the dense ridge a City plow leaves at the end of the driveway are much harder work, and a plow truck usually handles those faster than a walk-behind machine. On deep storms, a crew may use the truck for the main surface and a snowblower to finish edges, the area by the garage door and any path to the front entrance. Either way, the goal is the same: a clear, usable driveway with the snow piled where it will not block sightlines or melt back across the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a snowblower gentler than a plow?

It can be more precise in tight spaces, but neither method is gentle on unmarked edges. Clear markers matter more than the machine.

Will I get the same service every visit?

Yes. Service is triggered automatically at 5 cm, and each visit is documented with timestamped photos.
