Years of winter plowing and salting take a visible toll on a driveway if it isn't cared for properly, from surface scarring to salt staining to gradual concrete deterioration. A few smart habits can keep your driveway looking good well beyond what most homeowners expect after a decade or more of London winters.
Salt choice matters more over the long term than most people realize. Standard rock salt is effective but can be harsher on concrete surfaces over many seasons compared to gentler alternatives like calcium magnesium acetate, which costs more but is considerably less corrosive to both concrete and nearby vegetation over years of repeated use.
Sealing your driveway periodically, especially concrete and asphalt surfaces, creates a protective barrier against salt penetration and the freeze-thaw cycles that cause cracking. A driveway sealed every two to three years typically shows far less wear over a decade than one that's never been treated, making this one of the highest-value maintenance steps available.
Blade height and equipment settings on the plow itself affect surface wear too. A well-maintained, experienced operator using properly adjusted equipment causes minimal surface scarring, while aggressive or poorly calibrated equipment can leave visible scratches and gouges that accumulate season after season.
Choosing Your De-icer
Not every surface needs the same treatment. New concrete, decorative pavers and stamped concrete are the most sensitive to salt. If your driveway falls into that group, or you have pets that walk on it, a pet-safe de-icer is a gentler option. We offer a pet-safe de-icer add-on for $120 a season, and standard seasonal salting for $175, which includes freezing rain and refreeze visits.
Edges, Drains and Steps
A lot of wear happens at the edges, where a plow can catch lawn, a curb or the lip of a paver border. We mark edges, steps and drains before the season so operators know exactly where the hard surface ends. Keeping drains clear also matters: standing meltwater that refreezes overnight is a common source of both ice and surface damage.
A Simple Spring Check
Once the snow is gone, walk the driveway and look for new cracks, lifted pavers, salt staining and lawn damage along the edges. Rinse salt residue off concrete and pavers with a hose. Small cracks are cheaper to seal in spring than to repair after another winter of freeze-thaw. If anything was damaged during the season, our timestamped visit photos make it easier to look back at what happened and when.
Pavers and Stamped Concrete
Interlocking pavers and stamped concrete need a little extra attention. Joint sand can wash out over the winter, letting pavers shift, and salt can dull the colour of stamped concrete over time. Top up joint sand in spring, avoid piling heavy, salty snow banks on decorative borders, and consider a sealer made for your surface type. Ask about the pet-safe de-icer if you want to reduce salt contact on these surfaces.
Shovels and blowers can also chip raised paver edges. If your driveway has a decorative border, tell us when you book so it can be marked before the first storm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does plowing damage asphalt or concrete?
Normal plowing with a properly set blade causes very little wear. Most long-term damage comes from salt, freeze-thaw cycles and water that pools and refreezes.
Should I seal my driveway before winter?
Sealing every few years helps protect concrete and asphalt from salt and moisture. Apply it in warm, dry weather well before the first freeze.
