School mornings and snowfall

Snow rarely waits for a convenient time. It falls overnight, and by 7 a.m. there are lunches to pack, kids to get dressed and a bus or drop-off to make. Shovelling the driveway on top of all that is the part of the morning most parents would happily hand off. Automatic snow removal does exactly that.

Snow days are their own challenge. When school buses are cancelled, parents may still need to get to work, which means getting the car out on the very days the roads and driveways are at their worst. Having the driveway already cleared takes one problem off the list.

From December 1 to March 31, every snowfall of 5 cm or more triggers a visit. You do not need to call. In long storms we come back with return visits, so the driveway is open when you get home too. Every visit ends with a timestamped photo you can check on your phone.

Keep the walkway safe for little feet

Children run. They do not walk carefully around icy patches, and they rarely stick to the cleared part of the path. The front walkway and steps are where most family slips happen. Our walkway and steps service starts at $150 and is cleared on the same visit as the driveway.

• Clear the path the kids actually use, even if it is the side door.
• Salt steps and the bottom of the walkway, where ice forms first.
• Choose pet-safe de-icer ($120 seasonal) if you have a dog.
• Keep boots and a small bucket of de-icer by the door.

Snow storage and play areas

Kids love snowbanks, which is a good reason to think about where the snow pile goes. Keep large piles away from the end of the driveway and the sidewalk, where children climbing on them could be hidden from a car backing out or driving by. A pile on the side lawn, set back from the road, is safer and still fun.

New homes often have fresh sod and young trees. Before the season we mark edges, steps and drains so the crew knows where the hard surface ends and the lawn begins.

The road windrow

Village streets are plowed by the municipality, and the plow leaves a windrow of heavy, compacted snow across the end of the driveway. It is the hardest snow on the property to move and can freeze solid overnight. We clear it as part of every visit. Teach kids to stay away from the road edge when the plow is working; plow drivers have limited visibility, and windrows can hide small children.

Ice between snowfalls

Freeze-thaw cycles are common through a London-area winter. Snow melts on sunny afternoons and refreezes overnight, glazing driveways and steps. Seasonal salt is $175 plus HST and includes freezing rain and refreeze visits, so treatment happens when ice forms, not only when snow falls.

Pricing for families

Seasonal pricing is fixed for the winter: $650 to $725 plus HST for single or 1.5-car driveways, $815 for doubles and $1,050 for three-car, paver or stamped driveways. Priority early-morning clearing is $125. Teachers, nurses, firefighters, police and paramedics, along with seniors, save 5 percent on seasonal plans. A 30 percent deposit holds your spot, with the balance due before December 1.
