Why winter is the hardest season to help from a distance

Many adult children check in on parents by phone, drop off groceries on weekends or visit when they can. Snow does not fit that schedule. It falls overnight, it falls on weekdays, and it often falls when you are at work or across the province. A parent who wants to stay independent may decide to shovel the driveway themselves rather than wait, and that is exactly the situation most families want to avoid. Shovelling heavy, wet snow is hard physical work, and icy steps are a common place for a fall.

A seasonal service removes the guesswork. The driveway gets cleared automatically after every snowfall of 5 cm or more, from December 1 to March 31, without your parent needing to call anyone or remember to book.

You can book and pay on their behalf

Family members can set up the service and pay for a parent. You do not need to live at the address. When you request a quote, give us the parent's address and your own contact details, and tell us who should receive updates. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, Interac e-transfer to sales@thamesvalleysnow.ca, or card. A 30% deposit holds the spot and the balance is due before December 1.

See every visit without driving over

After every visit the crew takes a timestamped photo of the cleared property. For a family member who lives elsewhere, that photo is the reassurance: you can see that the driveway was done and when, without calling your parent to ask whether they went outside to check.

Do not forget the walkway and steps

A clear driveway does not help much if the path to the front door is still buried. For older parents, the walkway and front steps are often the more important part. Walkway and steps clearing starts from $150 for the season. If your parent has a dog or walks a lot, consider the pet-safe de-icer option at $120. Seasonal salting at $175 covers freezing rain and refreeze visits, which matters because ice, not snow, is usually what causes falls.

A short checklist before December

Walk the property with your parent, or ask them to describe it over a video call. Note anything a crew should know: a step that is uneven, a garden bed beside the drive, a basketball post, where the car usually sits. Before the season, edges, steps and drains are marked so they are easy to find under snow. Also talk about the car. If your parent still drives, agree on where they will park during storms so the driveway can be cleared fully.

Finally, think about early mornings. If your parent has regular medical appointments or a caregiver who arrives early, priority early-morning clearing ($125) puts their property toward the front of the route.
